Clas Eriksson Fleming (* around 1530 in Pargas ; † April 13, 1597 in Pohja , Nyland ) was a Swedish nobleman and admiral who played an important role in Swedish history during Sweden's rise to great power.

life and career

Fleming was born the son of Erik Joakimsson Fleming and Hebla Siggesdotter Sparre and came from Finland , which was then part of the Kingdom of Sweden, and was a confidante of the Swedish kings John III. and Sigismund III. Wasa .

Fleming's father, Erik (1487–1548), had served as Swedish admiral during the count's feud in the service of King Gustav Wasa . As governor of Finland and Estonia, Clas Eriksson Fleming was the country's second most powerful man after the king. He was a supporter of King Sigismund and an opponent of the regent Duke Karl (later Charles IX of Sweden ).

During the Three Crown War he fought against the Danish fleet under Peder Munk and was appointed the first Swedish Imperial Admiral ( Riksamiral ) in 1571 .

In Finland, it came under Fleming's rule for so-called cudgel war , an uprising of the peasants. The Finnish farmers suffered from high taxes and the billing they had to give the Swedish soldiers during and after the war. Duke Karl supported the rebellious peasants; however, the riot was bloodily crushed by Fleming's soldiers.

According to an anecdote, Duke Karl had Fleming's coffin opened shortly before the burial to make sure that his enemy was indeed dead.

Fleming was married to Ebba Stenbock (died March 8, 1614), a sister of Queen Katharina Stenbock and daughter of councilor Gustav Olofsson (Stenbock) and his wife Brita Eriksdotter (Leijonhufvud) since November 1, 1573 . After the death of her husband, Ebba Stenbock became governor of Finland, but Duke Karl had her and her daughters placed under house arrest shortly after the club war. Her son Johan Fleming was executed in Turku in 1599 on the orders of the new Reichsadmiral Joachim Scheel .
