Rocky Knob AVA is a 3,642 acre wine growing region in the US state of Virginia . Recognition as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) took place in 1983 and was expanded in 1987. The grape varieties grown include Seyval Blanc , Alicante Bouschet , Cabernet Franc , Cabernet Sauvignon , Chardonnay , Malbec , Merlot , Norton , Petit Verdot , Sangiovese , Syrah and Viognier .

location

The area in southwest Virginia extends east of the Blue Ridge Parkway over the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains . The wine-growing area is in Counties Floyd and Patrick . The height above sea level is between 490 and 1089 meters.

climate

The region's climate is humid all year round with prevailing westerly winds, the winters are usually very cold with occasional sudden snowstorms and blizzards , while the summer months usually remain warm and humid.
