The new breed originated (breeding number S 7053) from a cross between the Seibel vines S 5163 and S 880. The hybrid vines were crossed by the French breeder Albert Seibel , who from 1888 to the 1930s used numerous interspecific grape varieties in the fight against phylloxera bred. It is one of the better of the hybrid vines and was very successful in France until the 1950s. At the best of times, more than 40,000 hectares of vineyards were planted with the Chancellor variety in France alone. After the EU banned hybrid vines, the areas were abandoned or cleared.

The late-ripening and vigorous variety is very fungus-resistant and frost-resistant. This explains their popularity on the North American east coast (in the state of New York , North Carolina (→ viticulture in North Carolina ) and in New England ) and in Canada . Interesting rosé wines in the style of Clairet or dark red wines that mature in wooden barrels are produced there.

Due to its good fungus resistance, the variety has come back into focus when breeding new varieties. In Germany, for example, it was used to cross the Breidecker and Cabernet Cantor varieties, and in France it was used in the breeding of the Villard Noir and Chambourcin varieties .
