Tinto Cão (the name means "red dog", but the meaning is unknown) is an autochthonous red wine variety from Portugal and is cultivated in the Dão and Douro areas, for example.
Origin, descent
Is an autochthonous red wine variety from Portugal and was first mentioned in Portuguese literature in the mid-17th century. A DNA analysis showed a closer relationship to the Portuguese grape varieties Tinta Francisca and ' Viosinho '.
Harold Olmo crossed the 'Tinto Cão' with the variety ' Alicante Ganzin ' in Davis for the successful new breed ' Rubired '.
distribution
Their cultivation is recommended in the Trás-os-Montes , Beira Litora and Beira Interior regions and approved in the Douro , Minho , Ribatejo and Oeste regions . In the 1990s, a planted vineyard area of 1059 hectares was raised. The worldwide cultivation area in 2010 was 369 hectares. There are trial plantings at the University of California at Davis and there are smaller areas in California (approx. 20 hectares). Smallest populations have been surveyed in Switzerland (0.0393 hectares, as of November 2015).
Ampelographic features
- The tip of the shoot is very hairy, whitish green with a reddish tinge.
- The leaf is large, three to five lobes, pentagonal with broad central lobes. The stalk bay is V-shaped with touching leaves. The underside of the leaf is hairy and the leaf margin is serrated.
- The grape is small to medium-sized, pyramidal and heavily shouldered with compact, small, round, black-blue colored, strongly scented berries. They have a thick berry skin. Berries reach a high concentration of sugar when ripe.
Maturity: late
properties
The variety is vigorous and sprouts late. Is well resistant to botrytis and flower-proof.
Wine
The late ripening variety produces a wine with a dark red color which is very full-bodied and alcoholic.
It is one of the varieties allowed for the production of port wine . With ' Tinta Barroca , Touriga Francesca , Touriga Nacional , Tinta Roriz (= Tempranillo) and Tinta Amarela , it is one of the 6 most important varieties of this well-known red wine .
