Tinta Francisca

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tinta Francisca is a red grape variety . It is cultivated in the north of Portugal in the areas of Beira Litoral, Beira Interior and Trás-os-Montes . It is also grown on a small scale in South Africa. Their origin is still unclear. It is said to have been brought from France to the Quinta de Roriz (between Pinhão and Tua on the Douro) by the Irishman James Archibold. A first assumption that it was the Pinot Noir turned out to be wrong. Smaller plantings are also known in South Africa. The variety sprouts late and produces rather light red wines with strong sweetness and little character. It is one of the varieties, albeit the less important one, for port wine .

A DNA analysis showed a closer relationship to the Portuguese grape variety Tinto Cão .

Synonyms: Tinta de Franca, Tinta Franceza.
