Rubired

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rubired is a red wine variety . It is a new breed by Harold Olmo between the varieties Alicante Ganzin and Tinto Cão . The crossing took place in 1938 at the University of California in Davis in California. It was released in 1958 at the same time as the Royalty variety . The goal of breeding was to produce deep dark wines to produce a Californian counterpart to port wine . In California it occupies more than 4,000 hectares of vineyards and is mainly grown in the Central Valley . There are also smaller stocks in Australia (approx. 600 hectares) and Mexico (approx. 500 hectares).

The vigorous and high-yielding variety produces red wines with a very dark color. It is therefore very well suited as a dye grape (also called Teinturier internationally ) and is used as a coloring blending partner for Californian wine and for coloring grape juice.

Like most grape varieties, Rubired is monoecious . In seed plants, monoeye denotes the presence of female and male flowers on a plant. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to plant any male plants that produce yield is avoided.
