Alicante Ganzin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The red variety Alicante Ganzin is a new breed between Aramon rupestris - Ganzin No. 4 and Alicante Bouschet. The crossing of the hybrid vine took place in 1886 by Frenchman Victor Ganzin. Aramon rupestris - Ganzin No. 4 is itself a cross between the grape variety Aramon and the wild grape Vitis rupestris.

The slow-growing and low-yielding variety has berries with deep red flesh. The variety is not resistant to phylloxera . The wine has a neutral taste, but has 46 times more color than the Aramon variety, so it belongs to the family of colored grapes ! That is why it was used as a partner for the breeding of other dye grapes (Teinturier) varieties, for example the California (→ Viticulture in California ) varieties Royalty and Rubired , both of which were worked on by Harold Olmo . The breeder Albert Seibel also used them for the Seibel vines Seibel 4646, Seibel 5437 and Seibel 6339.

Parentage: Aramon rupestris - Ganzin No. 4 ( Aramon × Vitis rupestris ) × Alicante Bouschet .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is hairy like a cobweb and colored light green. The young leaves are also hairy and copper-colored ( anthocyanin ).
  • The medium-sized leaves are five-lobed and deeply indented (see also the article leaf shape ). The stem bay is lyren-shaped open. The sheet is serrated to a point. The teeth are set very closely compared to the grape varieties. The leaves turn red in autumn.
  • The cylindrical grape is very long. The oval berries are black-blue in color.

Alicante Ganzin is very sensitive to the fungal diseases powdery mildew and downy mildew . It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided. However, due to its susceptibility to disease, the variety does not play a role in viticulture.
