Scheiden is located in the middle of the Saarland high forest at an altitude of 480 to 510  m above sea level. NHN about 4 km north of Losheim. The highest point of the district reaches a height of 585  m above sea level. NHN . This means that the smallest district in terms of population in the municipality of Losheim am See is also the highest town in the Saarland.

history

Scheiden was first mentioned in a document in 1303 in a Vogtei-Weistum of the high court of Losheim. Remnants of the wall of an old castle, however, indicate settlement as early as Roman times. The popular name of this castle is likely to give rise to this assumption: Römerburg ". The Römerpfad, an old Roman road between Trier and Saarbrücken, also known locally as the Rennpfad (dialect:" Rennpööd "), is a reminder of this time.

Scheiden had always been a branch of the Losheim parish from its foundation until the church community, Waldhölzbach-Scheiden was established in 1923. According to the visitation protocol of the Merzig Regional Chapter from 1569, there was already a chapel in Scheiden. The chapels of this time were walled wayside shrines with a roof and a front.

Notarial files exist from 1621 on disputes between Scheiden and Losheim residents over a hedge forest and pastures, some of which belonged to Losheim and some to Scheiden. The visitation protocol from Losheim from May 25, 1623 reports from Rügen against Scheidener residents. Rügen mostly resulted in fines. Other files report on taxes (including the tithe), compulsory service and other obligations of the Scheiden population towards monasteries and high courts.

Five farming families lived in Scheiden in 1632. In 1635 during the Thirty Years War (1618–1648) the village and chapel were completely destroyed and abandoned by the people. The place was deserted for 30 years, and it wasn't until 1676 that the first people settled here again. The Neusiedler Gangloff and his family are known by name, followed by Thomas Steier in 1698 and Johann Weyand in 1702. In 1772 Scheiden had a chapel again, which was assigned by Pastor Dondelinger von Losheim in 1778 and possibly destroyed in 1805 by the French revolutionary troops.

In 1815 the Prussians came and brought u. a. general compulsory schooling. In 1821/22 a joint school for Bergen, Scheiden and Waldhölzbach was built in Scheiden and a new church was built in 1841/42.

On May 7, 1857, the whole place burned down completely except for the houses that were probably already covered with slate, such as the church and school as well as two other houses. After the village was rebuilt in the same year, the water shortage was remedied by a well (bur) built in the center of the village (1863). However, it could not be prevented that a few years later another fire raged in the earlier one so that two children were killed.

In 1923 the own Vicarie Waldhölzbach-Scheiden was founded. In the last days of the Second World War, 16 civilians were killed in Scheiden in 1945, the damage to the buildings was between 75 and 80%.

In 1974 the municipality of Scheiden became part of the unified municipality of Losheim am See as part of the regional and administrative reform.

In 2003 Scheiden celebrated the 700th anniversary of the town.

Every year on Ascension Day, the club organizes the Scheiden village festival, which has become very popular in the region.

The current mayor is Hans Hamel (SPD).

Scheiden is a state-approved resort .
