Bergen is a district of the municipality of Losheim am See in the Merzig-Wadern district ( Saarland ). In 2003 the place celebrated its 700th birthday.

Geography and landscape

Bergen is located on the south side of the foothills of the Black Forest high forest . It is bordered in the north by coniferous and mixed forests, in the other directions agricultural areas border the village. The Rotenbach , which also forms the border with Rhineland-Palatinate , flows on the north-western edge of the town . The Rotenbach also feeds a fire extinguishing water pond, which is used as a "bathing lake" in summer despite its relatively low water temperature (almost no direct sunlight and fed by a cold forest stream).

history

Since its creation around the year 1000 AD, Bergen has been closely connected to the Benedictine Abbey of Mettlach . It can be assumed that the place was founded as a Fronhof to supply the monastery on the initiative of the monks.

Bergen in Losheimer Weistum was first mentioned in a document on January 7, 1303. Until the dissolution of the Mettlach monastery by the French revolutionary troops in 1794, Bergen remained in the possession of the abbey. Politically, Bergen belonged to the care Losheim during this time , in the Saarburg office (from 1778 in the Merzig office), which in turn belonged to the Electorate of Trier . From 1798 Bergen belonged to the Mairie Losheim in the canton of Merzig, which was assigned to the Arrondissement de Saarbrücken in the Saardepartement , during the entire French rule .

After a short Austrian-Bavarian interlude, the Prussian period followed from 1816. Bergen now belonged to the Losheim mayor's office in the Merzig district, Trier district , Rhine province , in the Kingdom of Prussia . From 1919 to 1946, Bergen belonged to the remainder of the Wadern district as part of the Losheim district , and from October 1, 1946 to the present day, it belonged to the Merzig-Wadern district .

On January 1, 1974, the previously independent municipality of Bergen was incorporated into the municipality of Losheim.

Bergen took part in the competition Our village should become more beautiful several times . It was able to take second place twice. The place is divided into a relatively old town center (also called Unterdorf) and a new residential area (Oberdorf), which has been growing steadily since the post-war period. The village square, which is located directly on Landesstraße 373, forms the core of the lower village. The maypole is set up here every May.

The so-called traditional “Old Town Feschd” takes place every year on the Assumption Day on this village square . The Gasthaus Weins is the linchpin of the so-called "Bergener" hiking premium route. The hiking route was recognized as one of the most beautiful and varied hiking routes (approx. 10 km) and opens up wonderful views and beautiful natural monuments for hikers.

Until 2003 there was a fountain made of concrete blocks in the village square. However, this was in need of renovation and had to be demolished for cost reasons.

In the upper village, the community center with its forecourt forms the core. A playground for children is adjacent . Kindergarten and fire station are also located in this building.
