The Black Forest high forest is the up to 816.32  m high southwestern part of the Hunsrück in northern Saarland and the neighboring Rhineland-Palatinate . The dialect Hohwäller belongs to the Moselle-Franconian dialect group .

In the Saar-Hunsrück nature park , the Black Forest high forest stretches from Mettlach (Saarland) to Erbeskopf (Rhineland-Palatinate). There it is located northwest of Losheim , Weiskirchen , Wadern and Nonnweiler in Saarland and between Hermeskeil and Birkenfeld and Thalfang and Idar-Oberstein in Rhineland-Palatinate.

To the north lies the Osburger Hochwald ; both together are called Hochwald for short . The southeastern part of the Black Forest high forest is known as the Dollberge and to the northeast the Idarwald joins.

Establishment as a national park

According to a decision by the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of the Environment, parts of the Black Forest high forest have formed the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park since March 2015 . The Soonwald was also on the shortlist .
