Primary Chapel

Wahlen is a part of the municipality of Losheim am See in the Merzig-Wadern district ( Saarland ). After Losheim, Wahlen is the second largest district in the municipality.

Wahlen is the name giver for the natural area Wahlener Platte .

history

Wahlen was first mentioned in a document in 1147. Today the place lies in a basin framed by eight hills. Before 1635, the place was where the so-called “Urwahlener Chapel” stands today. The place was almost completely depopulated in the Thirty Years War and probably completely destroyed in 1677. The survivors settled in the branch of Wahlen mentioned in 1569. Even today, especially in the area of the Cape Forest (sports field), it can be seen that it was a former swamp area . On January 1, 1974, the previously independent municipality of Wahlen was incorporated into the municipality of Losheim.

The interpretation of the name "Urwahlen" offers two variations. The prefix “Ur” as a temporal component or a removal of “Oberwahlen” as a spatial component.

Culture and sights

The high altar and the pulpit of the parish church of St. Helena from the 18th century and the Urwahlener chapel from 1868 are worth seeing. This chapel rises above the foundation walls of the former parish church, the ruins of which (tower and choir) were mentioned in 1739.

Sports

The football club SV Wahlen (founded in 1928) already played in the Landesliga Süd-West and has since been relegated to the district league B Losheim. The 2009 newly founded game community SG Wahlen-Niederlosheim rose to the regional league West. In 2015 the two clubs SV Wahlen and DJK Niederlosheim were merged into one club, SV Wahlen-Niederlosheim. The men's team rose in the Association League South-West.
