St. Helena is the Catholic parish church consecrated to St. Helena in Wahlen in Saarland , a district of the municipality of Losheim am See in the Merzig-Wadern district . In the list of monuments of the Saarland the church building is a single monument listed.

history

The original church building was erected in two stages. The nave was built in 1747 and the tower in 1750 . In the middle of the 19th century there was an expansion by enlarging the nave by half. In 1887 the church underwent an interior restoration .

According to plans by the architect Moritz Gombert ( Saarbrücken ), the church was expanded or rebuilt again between 1927 and 1928. The transepts , the choir , the sacristy , the parish hall and additions to the baroque tower were built. Another expansion measure in 1932 led to the tower being increased by one storey. In addition, the tower received an onion roof .

From 1956 to 1957 a restoration took place under the direction of the restorer Voitié ( Trier ). In the mid-1960s, the interior of the church was renovated. An altar island and a new floor were created. In 1979 the church was restored by the restorers Günter and Arnold Mrziglod ( Tholey ).

Furnishing

The church's furnishings include the pulpit from 1630 with a figure of St. Michael and the four evangelists sitting on the sound cover , the high altar with rotating tabernacle from the 18th century and the altarpiece from 1920. These were made in 1956/57 by the restorer Voitié (Trier) restored.

Further items of equipment are a picture panel made in 1972 by the painter Walter Persy (Trier), which adapts itself to the color of the high altar and pulpit thanks to the predominantly blue coloring and shows an illustration of the prayer for the consecration of baptismal water, also by Persy and as a hanging cross executed altar cross and the radiation Madonna and St. Joseph -Figur the far side altars on two Baroque - pillars just this side altars, which were in 1979 reorganized by Günter and Arnold Mrziglod (Tholey).

The organ of the church was built in 1908 by the organ building company Mamert Hock ( Saarlouis ). In 1996 the Trompete 8 ′ register was supplemented by Hugo Mayer ( Heusweiler ). Bells

In 1957, the Saarlouiser bell foundry in Saarlouis-Fraulautern, which was founded by Karl (III) Otto from the Otto bell foundry in Bremen-Hemelingen and Alois Riewer from Saarland in 1953, cast two bronze bells for the St. Helena Church in elections the beat notes: d ′ - a ′.
