The area lies within the administrative areas of Westmoreland County , King George County , Northumberland County , Lancaster County, and Richmond County . The protected designation of origin has been recognized by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives .

The wine-growing region is located on a peninsula between the Potomac River and the Rappahannock River near Chesapeake Bay . Due to the proximity to the sea and the water masses of the two rivers, there are more frost-free days in the area than in the rest of Virginia.
