Pinotage

Pinotage is a red grape that by crossing of Pinot Noir (Pinot Noir) and Cinsault has emerged. It is mainly grown in South Africa .

The new breed was carried out by Abraham Isak Perold in 1925 at the University of Stellenbosch . The name arose from Perold's original name: "Perold's Hermitage x Pinot ", which was marketed under the short form "Pinotage" from 1959. The Cinsault grape variety was and is still sometimes called Hermitage in South Africa, hence the name.

Pinotage ripens early and is very sugary. It thrives best in hot and dry vineyards. Usually, Pinotage is made from a single variety, but cuvées with the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon are also known for their velvety structure and the aroma of red berries.

The Pinotage vine grows almost exclusively in South Africa. The area under cultivation there was 6,139 hectares in 2007. Small stocks can be found in New Zealand, Canada, Brazil, Israel and California. Cultivation attempts in Argentina (→ viticulture in Argentina ) and Australia (→ viticulture in Australia ) failed. In 2008, the area under vines in New Zealand was 74 hectares with a slightly downward trend. In 2007 the area under vines was 88 hectares.
