The Drôme is a river in south-east France that runs in the Drôme department of the same name in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region . It rises in the French pre-Alps at an altitude of 1600 meters in the municipality of La Bâtie-des-Fonds and generally drains north-west to west. After 110 kilometers, the Drôme flows into the Rhône as a left tributary south of Valence , in the municipality of Loriol-sur-Drôme . It is a typical Mediterranean river that carries little water in summer and turns into a raging body of water in spring and autumn.

The Drôme is, like the river Ardèche further south-west , an attractive area for kayaking and canoeing; The upper section of the river is only recommended for experienced paddlers.

In its lower reaches, between Crest and Loriol-sur-Drôme , it meanders through the Réserve naturelle des Ramières , a nature reserve of national importance with numerous animal and plant species.

A 93 meter long wooden bridge has been crossing the Drôme near Crest since 2001 . It is the longest wooden bridge in France.
