Loriol-sur-Drome is a French municipality with 6593 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Drôme in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes ; administratively it belongs to the arrondissement of Valence and is the capital of the canton of the same name Loriol-sur-Drôme .
geography
The small town is located around 20 kilometers north of Montélimar and about the same distance south of Valence on the left side of the Rhône valley . The neighboring municipalities of Loriol-sur-Drôme are:
- Livron-sur-Drôme in the north,
- Grane in the east,
- Cliousclat in the south,
- Saulce-sur-Rhône in the southwest,
- Baix also in the southwest and
- Le Pouzin in the west (both already in the Ardèche department ).
The western boundary of the municipality runs in the middle of the Rhône, the northern border is formed by the Drôme , which flows into the Rhône here. From the Rhone on the left bank of a power plant channel (branches Canal d'Amenée ), who in Saulce-sur-Rhône , the hydroelectric plant Usine Bethenod supplies. When the canal branches off, the Rhône itself is dammed by a weir system ( Barrage der Loriol ).

The municipal area is accessed from the national road N7 , which runs on the left side of the Rhône in a north-south direction. This is crossed in Loriol-sur-Drôme by the departmental road D104, which crosses the Rhône to the west with a bridge and continues via Le Pouzin to Privas . In an easterly direction, the road runs along the left bank of the Drôme to Crest . The A7 motorway and the Paris – Marseille railway line , which has a train station in Loriol , also run through the municipality .

The Loriol firefighters
On November 29, 2002, five members of the Loriol Volunteer Fire Brigade were killed in an accident. You were on a mission on the A7 motorway when an 81-year-old driver raced into the group at over 150 km / h. Four firefighters were killed on the spot. A fifth was hurled into the Drôme and his remains were not found until eleven years later. The driver of the accident vehicle was sentenced to five years imprisonment. Today a memorial near the accident site commemorates the tragic event.
