Brette is a French municipality with 40 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the south of the department Drôme in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Le Diois and the municipal association Pays Diois .
geography
Brette is located at an average altitude of 1060 meters above sea level 45 kilometers northeast of Montélimar , surrounded by the neighboring communities are Pradelle , Saint-Nazaire-le-Désert and Volvent . The Roanne flows on the western edge through the municipality, which has an area of 15.5 square kilometers.
history
In 1793, during the French Revolution (1789–1799) , Brette received the status of a municipality and in 1801 the right to local self-government. The municipality had the highest population (254) in 1851. After that, the population decreased until 1990, when the municipality only had 27 inhabitants.

Culture and sights
There is a plaque on the cemetery wall commemorating an agreement that was reached between the Catholics and Protestants of Brette in 1636. They shared the cemetery , but entered it through different gates to avoid conflict.
economy
The main occupation in Brette is lavender cultivation . The lavender is distilled and the oil is sold locally. Another line of business is tourism, there is a hiking trail through the lavender fields and an old distillery. There are two holiday homes in Brette and a hostel in the mountains. It was originally used by workers in a copper mine, then served as a farm and later housed forest workers.
In the municipality, there are controlled designations of origin (AOC) for Picodon and Protected Geographical Indications (IGP) for lamb ( Agneau de Sisteron ) , poultry ( Volailles de la Drôme ) , honey ( Miel de Provence ) , einkorn and einkorn flour ( Farine de Petit épeautre respectively Petit épeautre de haute Provence ) , lavender oil ( Huile essentielle de lavande de Haute-Provence ) and white , rosé and red wines with the designation ( Drôme and Méditerranée ) .
