The continuous population decline is mainly due to the remote location of the place and the loss of jobs as a result of the mechanization of agriculture .
economy
The inhabitants of the place lived for centuries as a self-sufficiency from agriculture (agriculture and cattle breeding). Wine was also grown; the place still has the right to market its grapes through the Mediterranée and Drôme appellations ; but because of the altitude, hardly any wine is grown. Instead, there are olive, apricot, cherry and apple trees to a lesser extent; there are also numerous lavender fields . Since the last decades of the 20th century, tourism has played an important role in the economic life of the place in the form of renting holiday apartments ( gîtes ) .
history
Small Neolithic and Gallo-Roman finds have been made in the municipality of La Motte-Chalancon .
In the 10th century there was a castle (château) , but in the high and late Middle Ages the place was under the manorial rule ( seigneurie ) of the lords of Bruis or Cornillon . At the end of the 16th century there was a large Protestant community - as in the neighboring towns of La Charce , Saint-Dizier-en-Diois , Arnayon and others .
Attractions
- The local parish church dominates the place and stands in the former area of the castle. However, the church was renewed in the 14th century in Gothic style and revised again in 1896/97.
- A Protestant temple built in the 19th century with a simple bell gable (clocher mur) stands in the middle of the village.
Parish partnership
There is a partnership with Stembert , a district of Verviers in Belgium .
