Stembert ( Walloon : Stimbiè , German obsolete: Steinberg ) is a municipality in the Belgian city of Verviers in the province of Liège . Around 8,700 people live in Stembert on an area of 6.36 km² (as of 2014).

description

The beginnings of the place go back to the 13th century, when the place became an independent settlement with the right to hold its own market. The de Stembert family, who had their own manor there, also had a first chapel dedicated to Saint Barbara built. After the chapel was looted and burned down in 1571 by reformed Dutch troops who besieged the Limbourg fortress , a separate parish was established in 1591. 1656 Stembert was raised to an independent municipality. In the 19th century, the parish church of St. Nicholas received a Way of the Cross created by the painter Jean-Simon Renier (1818–1907) from Verviers, modeled on old masters. Stembert was an independent municipality until the municipal merger in 1977 .

economy

  • Up until the 1960s there were several textile factories along a stream in the part of the village, and now medium-sized companies have settled there, as does the hamlet of Surdent, located north in the Weser valley , which formed an independent parish. After the Saint Jean-Baptiste church burned down in 1954, the new church was consecrated in 1957.
  • A hygiene product manufacturer that belongs to the Swedish group Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget has set up shop in a newer industrial zone .
  • The abandoned "Caserne Major Cougniaux", the former garrison barracks of Verviers, is located in Stembert.

folklore

Every year a beer festival takes place during the local fair on the 3rd weekend in July in the “Salle Chanteloup”.
