It belongs to the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region (before 2016 Rhône-Alpes ), the Département Drôme , the Arrondissement Die (until 2017 Valence ) and the canton Vercors-Monts du Matin (until 2015 Chabeuil ). The inhabitants are called Chaffalois .

Le Chaffal is located about 21 kilometers east-southeast of Valence . Le Chaffal is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Léoncel in the north, Omblèze in the east, Plan-de-Baix in the south, Gigors-et-Lozeron in the southwest, Combovin in the west and Châteaudouble in the northwest.
