La Charce ( Occitan : identical) is a municipality and a town with 34 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) to the east of the department Drôme in the southern French region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . Since 2015 the place belongs to the " Parc naturel régional des Baronnies Provençales ".

The place La Charce is located on the river Oule at an altitude of about 620 m above sea level. d. M. approx. 44 km (driving distance) northwest of the small town Nyons .

The continuous population decline is mainly due to the remote location of the place and the loss of jobs as a result of the mechanization of agriculture .
economy
The inhabitants of the place lived for centuries as a self-sufficiency from agriculture (agriculture and cattle breeding). Wine was also grown; The place still has the right to market its grapes through the Appellations Comtés Rhodaniens , Coteaux des Baronnies , Mediterranée and Drôme ; but because of the altitude, wine is hardly grown any more. Instead, there are olive, apricot, cherry and apple trees to a lesser extent; there are also numerous lavender fields . Since the last decades of the 20th century, tourism has played an important role in the economic life of the place in the form of renting holiday apartments ( gîtes ) .
history
Although Neolithic and Gallo-Roman finds were made in the neighboring village of La Motte-Chalancon, about seven kilometers to the northwest, La Charce remained largely untouched by the historical events of the region due to its remote location.
The place and its church belonged to the priory of Saint-May in the Middle Ages . In the 16th century, Protestantism was able to gain a foothold in the town and region.
Attractions
- The Château de La Charce is a renaissance building from the 15th / 16th century , standing on older foundations . Century. Two corner round towers and the residential wing ( corps de logis ) between them with numerous stone cross-frame windows survived the times, but are in poor condition. The castle has been recognized as a monument historique since 1926 .
- The former Catholic parish church of Notre-Dame was temporarily converted into a Protestant temple during the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598) , but nothing has survived.
