Vinsobres is a municipality with 1115 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the south of France in the department of Drôme in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes , about eight kilometers west of Nyons .
The origin of the place name cannot be clearly clarified. The old Gallic name Vintiobriga could be composed of the parts vins for wind and briga for mountain, fortress. Vinsobres would therefore roughly mean "windy mountain fortress".

Attractions
The oldest building in the village is the priory that towers above the village and dates from the 12th century. It was particularly exposed to the turmoil of French religious history and its affiliation changed several times between Protestants and Catholics. Today it is a "temple" (French temple) of the Reformed Church. From its forecourt, the view extends far over the Eygues Valley to Mont Ventoux .
The Catholic church in the town center was built between 1685 and 1710. Inside it houses a magnificent chandelier from the 18th century.
Economy and Infrastructure
Vinsobres is located in the traditional olive growing area around Nyons. For a long time, olive cultivation was in the foreground. However, this changed with the heavy frosts in 1929 and 1956. Before 1929 there were around 55,000 olive trees in the municipality, but after the frost of 1956 there were only 7,000. Since then, the municipality has increasingly relied on the Viticulture. The Vinsobres wine-growing region in the southern section of the Rhône wine-growing region has had the status of an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC for short) since February 15, 2006 . Another important source of income is tourism.
Others
Vinsobres is home to the Croquettes de Vinsobres , which are popular throughout the Drôme Provençale and beyond , a lightly sugared, crispy biscuit with a high almond content, which is often served with coffee in the area.
