location

The place Puygiron lies on a slight hill above the river Jabron in the west of the department Drôme, near the border to the department Ardèche at an altitude of approx. 170  m ; the next larger city, Montélimar , is about 10 km (driving distance) to the west.

The population decline in the first half of the 20th century is largely due to the loss of jobs as a result of the mechanization of agriculture . The population increase in recent decades, on the other hand, is related to the proximity to the city of Montélimar and the significantly lower property prices in the countryside.

economy

The inhabitants of the place lived for centuries as a self-sufficiency from agriculture (agriculture and cattle breeding). Wine was also grown; the place still has the right to market its grapes through the Appellations Comtés Rhodaniens , Mediterranée and Drôme ; There are still vineyards in the vicinity of the village, but there are no longer any vintners in the village. Since the last decades of the 20th century, tourism has played an important role in the economic life of the place in the form of renting holiday apartments ( gîtes ) .

history

Attractions

  • The at Cemetery (cimetière) standing Romanesque chapel St-Bonnet is still attributed to the 12th century; later modifications changed its appearance. The ornamented gable stones of the original building are still partially preserved. It was recognized as a Monument historique in 1929 .
  • The light limestone church of St-Jean-Baptiste is an imposing 19th century building in neo-Romanesque style with a transept and a crossing octagon . The facade is flanked by two defensive-looking turrets.
  • Essentially only four corner towers remain from a late medieval castle . The residential wing ( corps de logis ) comes from the late Renaissance . The building was recognized as a monument historique in 1957 .
