Mirabel-aux-Baronnies behind its vineyards and in front of Mont Ventoux

Mirabel-aux-Baronnies is a municipality with 1620 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the south of France in the department of Drôme in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . Located on the top of a hill, Mirabel is known for its mild climate. The parish was first mentioned in 1059 as Mirabello Castello . It is located on the Gaude river , just before its confluence with the Eygues , halfway between Nyons and Vaison-la-Romaine .

The vineyards of the place are in the wine-growing area of the southern Rhône valley . The wines may be marketed under the designation of origin Côtes du Rhône and the qualitatively stricter Côtes du Rhône Villages . Today the population lives mainly from agriculture and tourism.

history

Mirabel-aux-Baronnies is the former capital of a tribe of the Voconces, the Gaudensern. It is said that Mirabel got its name from the high tower of the former castle. The tower was called Turris Mirabellis and allegedly you could see from its top to Orange in the Vaucluse department . Later it became part of the Montauban family under the name Castrum Mirabellum . On October 9, 1206, the Baron Dragonet de Montauban and his son Raymond exchanged Mirabel and his surroundings with Eliarde, the abbess of Saint-Césaire d'Arles, for the feudal lordship of Vinsobres .

After the Dauphins acquired the title of baron, Mirabel became more and more important, it even had its own money, and the population increased. The castle was fortified and enlarged, the Saint-Julien chapel was rebuilt. The Beaulieu area, to the south of Mirabel, became one of the headquarters of the Dauphins. In the 14th century Mirabel was badly damaged during the Huguenot Wars . Until 1348 there was also a Jewish quarter in the community called Les Joisols , which was outside the walls in the north near the Françonne river. When the suspicion arose that the Jews had caused the plague, they were either expelled or murdered in 1348, and the houses in their neighborhood were destroyed.

After the Huguenot Wars, Mirabel-aux Baronnies changed significantly. First the chapel of Saint-Julien and then in 1633 the castle and parts of the walls were destroyed. However, for fear of the plague, these walls were reconstructed in 1652 and provided with four new gates. The church that exists today was rebuilt on the remains of the old chapel between 1645 and 1651. Between 1790 and 1800 Mirabel was the capital of the canton of Nyons . After Robespierre's murder in July 1794, Mirabel was a major center of royal parties.

Since 1876, Mirabel-aux-Baronnies was one of the first municipalities in France to have its own water system. For this purpose, Italian specialists were employed who lived and worked in Mirabel for several years and had their own school for their children on site. Then as now, the water came from the Tune spring , four kilometers to the northeast. From here the water flows through a system of on-site made concrete pipes with a diameter of 20 cm, which feeds four (former) public washing areas and two fountains. One of these fountains has existed since the 13th century and was later connected to the water system, both fountains are still in good condition.
