geography
Aleyrac is located at an average altitude of 461 meters above sea level on the southern edge of the Drôme department, 16 kilometers southeast of Montélimar , surrounded by the neighboring communities of Portes-en-Valdaine , Salles-sous-Bois and Souspierre . history
The Notre-Dame priory was first mentioned in 1105. In 1160, a meeting of several monastery leaders of the region took place in the women's monastery under the direction of the Bishop of Die . The priory was under the Abbey of Saint-Pierre-les-Nonnains in Lyon . In 1295 13 people lived in the monastery, which had mainly forestry income, as it shared the seigneurial rights with the Count des Valentinois . In the Hundred Years War (1337-1453), around 1380, the nuns fled to Valréas and the priory was burned and looted. In 1437 the priory was finally dissolved and its properties handed over to the collegiate monastery of Sainte-Croix in Montélimar , which in 1528 sold the Seigneurie Aleyrac to the Baron von Grignan .
In 1793, during the French Revolution , Aleyrac received the status of a municipality and in 1801 the right to local self-government. The community had the highest number of inhabitants (103) in 1831. In 1946 it had only 20 inhabitants, after which the number of inhabitants rose again slightly.
