location

The place Reilhanette is located in the southwest of the Département Drôme, near the border with the Département Vaucluse at an altitude of about 600  m on the river Toulourenc ; the next largest city, Carpentras , is around 50 kilometers (driving distance) to the southwest. The thermal springs of Montbrun-les-Bains , which were already used in Gallo-Roman times, are only about two kilometers to the northeast.

The continuous decline in population is mainly due to the increasing mechanization of agriculture and the resulting loss of jobs.

economy

The inhabitants of the remote place lived for centuries as a self-sufficiency from agriculture (agriculture and livestock); a little wine was also grown. The place still has the right to market its grapes through the Appellations Comtés Rhodaniens , Coteaux des Baronnies , Mediterranée and Drôme ; However, it is unclear whether wine will be produced at all because of the altitude of the place. Traditionally there are some smaller lavender fields . Today, however, tourism plays a far more important role in the municipality's economic life.

history

In the 12th century, the Abbey of Saint-André de Villeneuve-lès-Avignon owned the Saint Hippolyte priory as well as the castle chapel and the local parish church . The medieval castle ( château ) towering over the town was demolished in 1560 by troops loyal to the king.

Attractions

  • The single-nave parish church of Saint-Michel-et-Saint-Hippolyte is possibly the former priory church. It dates from the 12th century and is made of roughly hewn rubble stones . The bell tower , fitted with precisely hewn corner stones , received a new bell storey in the 17th or 18th century. During the Counter Reformation the church was equipped with three baroque altars, including one dedicated to St. Eutropius of Saintes - the relic kept here was venerated as miraculous for a long time.
  • The medieval castle ruins are located on the highest point of the place.
