history

Arpavon was founded in the early Middle Ages and was first mentioned in 1216 as Castrum Arpaonis . Ernest Nègre assumes that the place name was Latin and that Castrum altum pavonis means something like ' high castle of the peacock ' in German. Originally there was also a castle above the town center. The theory of the peacock in the place name is supported by the fact that the church of Sainte-Jalle is decorated with a relief of a peacock and that another neighboring village, Villeperdrix , is called the ' country estate of the partridge '.

In 1330 there were 78 households (Feu fiscal) in the Seigneurie of Arpavon, which belonged to the barony of Mévouillon . In 1336 the Dauphins received the fief. They sold it to the Princes of Orange in 1341 . After 1378 the fiefdom belonged to the Margraviate of Saluzzo and changed hands several times until the French Revolution (1789–1799). In 1621 Arpavon was the scene of a battle of the Thirty Years War (1618–1648), during which the castle was completely destroyed.

In 1793 Arpavon received the status of a municipality in the course of the French Revolution and in 1801 the right to local self-government. The community had the most inhabitants (360) in 1793. After that, the population decreased until 1982 when the community only had 32 inhabitants.
