history

The main place of the Buxons , a subgroup of the Celtic tribe of the Vocontier , is located here; Roman traces have not yet been discovered. Since the 9th century, the barons of Mévouillon ruled Buis and the entire region that legally belonged to the Holy Roman Empire , but the Abbey of Saint-André de Villeneuve-lès-Avignon also maintained a priory here in the 12th century . Buis and, since 1125, Nyons too, were the capitals of the baronnies . In the early 14th century Buis came under the rule of the Dauphins of Viennois , whose territory, however - after a plague epidemic in 1347 - fell to the French crown in 1349 ; However, the dolphin has been preserved in the city arms. Buis suffered badly in the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598) and Nyons became the administrative center of the region during the French Revolution .

Attractions

Place des Arcades
  • The market square with arcade houses forms the economic and tourist center of the city. There are considerations that the ensemble, which is otherwise rather rare in eastern France, can be traced back to Swiss or southern German models.
  • The Tour du Pin and the Tour de Safre from the 14th century (now a ruin) were part of the former city fortifications ( remparts ).
  • The Église Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth is a rather rustic building from the late Gothic period . The nave has a pointed barrel vault .
  • The first Dominican monastery from the late 13th century fell victim to the destruction of the Huguenots in 1562. The new building, completed at the end of the 16th century, contained a seminar and a college. The building, nationalized during the revolutionary years, is now owned by the city. Two wings of the inner courtyard are part of the former cloister .
  • A renaissance portal has been preserved from the former Ursuline convent , which today forms the entrance to a residential building. The portal was already recognized as a Monument historique in 1926 .
  • The Maison des plantes aromatiques et médicinales is dedicated to the aromatic and medicinal plants of the High Provence. Linden blossoms are particularly characteristic of the region .
outside
  • Numerous hiking trails also open up the Rocher Saint-Julien , which towers high above the city .
  • Another destination is the Chapelle Saint-Trophime, enthroned above the valley, with a large statue of the saint in front of it.
