geography

The southern French mountain town with 441 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) is located in the south of the Drôme department 95 km south-southeast of Valence at almost 600 meters above sea level on a slope of Mont Ventoux . The Toulourenc flows through the municipality . The climate is Mediterranean and the landscape features vegetation that specializes in drought, with the numerous lavender fields particularly striking. The health resort has a thermal bath .

history

The sulphurous thermal baths were already used in Gallo-Roman times against rheumatism and skin diseases and to open the airways.

In the Middle Ages the rule belonged first to the d'Agoult and de Mévouillon families, and later to the Dupuy dynasty . In the 12th century, the Abbey of Saint-André de Villeneuve-lès-Avignon in Montbrun owned a priory and three churches. All of these institutions were subject to tax. In the 13th century the priory and a church remained.

Charles Dupuy was born in Montbrun in 1530. He was a lieutenant and successor to François de Beaumont - Baron des Adrets and became a leader of the Calvinists . He fought valiantly and was tried hard; for this he received the nicknames "the Protestant Bayard" and "the brave". On August 12 1575 the battle Bataille du pont de Mirabel at Chatillon-en-Diois wounded and captured, he was sent to Grenoble transferred and the Parlement sentenced to death. He was executed the very next day.

Anecdote: In 1876, various medical journals reported that it was customary for local women to breastfeed for 2½ to 3 years with the declared aim of preventing further pregnancies ; but if the child died, then either to adopt another child or to put a puppy on the breast regularly to suckle. In this way, the small town became known in numerous foreign trade magazines because a local doctor had observed that the puppies continuously developed rickets, which however disappeared again as soon as they were allowed to suckle their mother again. The doctor then made the opposite attempt and reported that he wanted to have children of rickets cured in this way.

Thermal bath

The thermal bath, which is an essential pillar of economic life for Montbrun and the surrounding area, was expanded in 2006. The health resort has numerous guest operations, including two large holiday villages and two resorts .

Attractions

  • The Beffroi or Tour l'Horloge ( clock tower ) stands halfway up the hill on which Montbrun-les-Bains is enthroned. This crenellated tower with a cast iron lantern served as one of the four city gates of the fortified city in the Middle Ages. The terrace offers an impressive view of the Anary valley (a tributary of the Toulourenc), the village of Reilhanette and the Mont Ventoux. The tower has been a listed building since 1926.
  • The parish church of Notre-Dame dates from the 12th century. The interior of the altarpiece by the sculptor Jacques Bernus (1650–1728) is remarkable, adorned with paintings by the Parrocel family .
  • The ruins of the Renaissance castle Château Dupuy-Montbrun , at the very top of the hill, dominate the place thanks to their size and location.
  • Located in a beautiful park, the Château de Gipière is a thermal bath from the 19th century. It is still in operation and open to the public today.
  • The Château Reybaud is a donjon with a square floor plan, which is located in the upper village center very close to the cliff.
