Rochebaudin is a French municipality with 121 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Drôme in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Nyons and the canton of Dieulefit .

geography

Rochebaudin is located at an average altitude of 611  m below the 971  m high Serre-Dur in the south of the Drôme department.

The place is eight kilometers (12 kilometers by car) north of Dieulefit and 25 kilometers east of Montélimar . Neighboring municipalities are Félines-sur-Rimandoule , Pont-de-Barret , Dieulefit, Le Poët-Laval and Eyzahut .

history

The oldest known documentary mention as Rochabaudunum comes from the year 1332. The inhabitants are called les Rochebaudinois or Rochebaudinoises . The place is a former fortress of the Counts of Valentinois . Later it came to County Clermont . The remote place and the church remained relatively unscathed in the Huguenot Wars from 1562.

Today Rochebaudin is a popular starting point for mountain hikes and a regional Marian pilgrimage site.

Attractions

  • The Romanesque chapel Notre-Dame-de-Séisse , a former 12th century monastery church, restored in 1833. It was already a place of pilgrimage to Mary in the Middle Ages, especially from May 5th to August 1st. According to contemporary reports, it was considered an honor for the residents of the region to be buried in the cemetery next to the chapel. Today's day of pilgrimage is August 15th, Assumption of Mary . The chapel has been listed as a national architectural heritage since 1926.
  • Remains of two castles from the Middle Ages on rock spurs above Rochebaudin.
  • Medieval village center with an old stone bridge.
