La Garde-Adhémar is a French commune with 1,107 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Drome region, in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Nyons and the canton of Le Tricastin .

The village is classified as one of the Plus beaux villages de France ( Most Beautiful Villages in France ).

history

La Garde-Adhémar is located on a rock that dominates the Rhone Valley at Pierrelatte . In the Middle Ages, the place was an important fortress of the Adhémar family. In the 16th century a Renaissance castle was built by Antoine Escalin, Baron de la Garde, ambassador and galley general, which was destroyed except for a tower during the revolution . Pauline de Grignan, Marquise de Simiane, daughter of Françoise de Sévgné, Comtesse de Grignan, and granddaughter of the Marquise de Sévigné lived in this castle .
