The place Aulan is located in the southwest of the Drôme department, near the border with the Vaucluse department at an altitude of about 750 m on the upper reaches of the Toulourenc river ; the next largest city, Carpentras , is about 60 km (driving distance) to the southwest. The continuous decline in population is mainly due to the increasing mechanization of agriculture and the resulting loss of jobs.
economy
The inhabitants of the remote place lived for centuries as a self-sufficiency from agriculture (agriculture and livestock); a little wine was also grown. The place still has the right to market its grapes through the Appellations Comtés Rhodaniens , Coteaux des Baronnies , Mediterranée and Drôme ; However, it is unclear whether wine will be produced at all because of the altitude of the place. Traditionally there are some smaller lavender fields . Today, however, tourism plays a far more important role in the municipality's economic life.
history
Small prehistoric and Roman finds were made in the municipality . In the 12th century, the Abbey of Saint-André de Villeneuve-lès-Avignon owned the Saint-Pierre-de-Cumbis priory here . The medieval castle (château) towering over the town was expanded again and again by its owners in the centuries that followed.
Attractions
- The single-aisled parish church of Saint-Jacques dates from the 12th century and is built from roughly hewn rubble stones . Its facade was redesigned with simple means in the 17th century; A simple bell gable (clocher mur) rises above the apse . The interior of the church is decorated with decorative paintings in places; the altar is a work of the 18th century.
- The castle rising above the village originally dates from the Middle Ages; However, it was expanded again and again by its owners in the following centuries. The current building complex is privately owned, but can be visited in the summer months. The castle was partially classified as a monument historique in 1950 .
