Sébastien Wyart (born October 12, 1839 in Bouchain , † August 18, 1904 in Rome ) was a French officer, Roman Catholic clergyman, Trappist , abbot and Abbot General of the Trappists .

life and work

The soldier

Henri Wyart grew up in a Catholic environment in northern France. As a young high school teacher in Tourcoing , he volunteered in 1860 for the troop of French-Belgian tirailleurs set up by General Louis Juchault de Lamoricière (known as the Papal Zouaves from 1861 ) and fought on the side of Pope Pius IX in the Sardinian War . (including in the battle of Castelfidardo ). In 1867 he was promoted to Zouave captain. With the Zouaves he took part in the Franco-Prussian War , namely in the Battle of Loigny and Poupry , and was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor for his services .

The monk

In 1872 Wyart entered the monastery of Mont des Cats of the Cistercians of the strict observance (Trappists) and took the religious name Sébastien . He made his profession in 1874 and studied theology in Rome from 1875 to 1880 . There he was ordained a priest on March 31, 1877 in the Lateran Basilica by Cardinal Raffaele Monaco La Valletta . He was abbot of the monastery of Mont des Cats (1883–1889), of the monastery of Sept-Fons (1887–1899) and of the monastery of Cîteaux (1899–1904), administrator of the monastery of Tre Fontane and first abbot general of the newly founded Trappist order (1892-1904 ).
