Mont des Cats Monastery (Latin: Abbatia Sancta Maria de Monte ; Dutch: Abdij op de Katsberg ; French: Abbaye Saint-Marie-du-Mont ) is a Trappist abbey in the town of Godewaersvelde in French Flanders , France .
history
After the Antoniter order (including the mystic Charles Grimminck, 1676–1729) was based on the Katzberg near Godewaersvelde (near the Belgian border) from 1650 to 1792 , Trappist monks from the Le Gard monastery founded the Sainte Marie du Mont monastery there in 1826 , which in 1847 was elevated to the rank of abbey ( Abbaye du Mont des Cats ). A cheese made by the monks under the name of Mont des Cats has been associated with the abbey since 1890 . A Trappist beer produced in Scourmont Abbey has been sold under the same name since 2011 .
During the First World War , the monastery was in a contested zone and served as a hospital. The seriously wounded Prince Maximilian von Hessen-Kassel (* 1894), a nephew of Kaiser Wilhelm II , died here on October 12, 1914 in the abbot's arms. The monastery was bombed from April to August 1918.
