geography

Location of Godewaersvelde in the Dunkerque arrondissement

The municipality of Godewaersvelde is located in French Flanders in the far north of France, roughly halfway between the cities of Dunkerque and Lille . In the north, the municipality borders on Belgium (Poperinge municipality). The northern and western parts of the municipality are mostly flat, in the southeast the 164 m high Mont des Cats ( Katsberg ) rises , the top of which is shared by the municipalities of Godewaersvelde, Berthen and Méteren. The elevation represents one of several nearby witness mountains which, as a ridge, separates the basin of the Yser ( IJzer ) in the north from the basin of the Leie ( Lys ) in the south. The area of the municipality is traversed by several streams that drain towards the north to the Yser. The landmark of the Katsberg, visible from afar, is a 200 meter high transmission mast.

In addition to the closed settlement image of the core town, the districts of Keyselaere and Meulewalle , the abbey on the Katsberg ( Abbaye du Mont des Cats ) and numerous scattered individual farms are located in the municipality of Godewaersvelde .

Neighboring communities of Godewaersvelde are Poperinge in the north, Boeschepe in the east, Berthen and Méteren in the southeast, Flêtre in the south, Eecke in the west and Steenvoorde in the northwest.
