Wulverdinghe , Dutch and West Flemish Wulverdinghe is a French municipality with 309 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . It is part of the Dunkerque arrondissement and a member of the Hauts de Flandre municipality . In Wulverdinghe, West Flemish was mostly spoken until the 1970s.
geography
The municipality of Wulverdinghe is located in the west of French Flanders , about twelve kilometers north of Saint-Omer in the far north of France. The municipality is located on the southwestern edge of the Flemish plain. The soil relief rises gradually towards the south and reaches 71 m above sea level on the southern border of the municipality.
The Berstoeke district belongs to Wulverdinghe . The river Clinke Becque , which feeds the Canal de la Haute Colme , which leads from Watten to Dunkirk , has its source here.
Neighboring communities of Wulverdinghe are Millam in the north, Volckerinckhove in the east, Lederzeele in the southeast, Saint-Momelin in the south and Watten in the west.
history
The name of the village comes from the 7th century when the Franks took possession of the area. It was Wulfafrithinga (meaning "wolf" and "peace"). In 1161 a villa Wulverdinghe on the Roman road from Watten to Cassel is mentioned. In 1186 the spelling Wulveric appears in a document . In 1190 the Counts of Flanders donated forest land in Wulverdinghe to the Abbey of Saint-Bertin .

Nine farms are located in the municipality (grain cultivation, dairy farming, cattle and poultry farming).
In the nearby municipality of Watten there is a connection to the trunk road from Dunkirk to Saint-Omer . The LGV Nord railway line from Paris to the Eurotunnel runs through the north of the municipality of Wulverdinghe .
