Estaires ( Dutch Steger ) is a French municipality with 6379 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the arrondissement of Dunkerque and the canton of Hazebrouck (until 2015: canton of Merville ) and is located about 25 km west-northwest (WNW) of Lille a little north of the river Leie (French: Lys ).

Neighboring municipalities of Estaires are Le Doulieu in the north, Steenwerck in the northeast, Sailly-sur-la-Lys in the east, La Gorgue in the south, Merville in the west and Neuf-Berquin in the north-west.

During World War I a long found in the region grave war or war of position instead. Both sides - the German and the French or the allies - undertook numerous offensives, but were unable to achieve any notable gains in terrain until around 1918. A German offensive was the Battle of the Lys (French la bataille de la Lys ) from April 9, 1918 to April 29, 1918, in France also known as 'la quatrième bataille d'Ypres' (Fourth Ypres Battle) or la bataille d'Estaires . As a result, the place name has a certain reputation in France.
