history
According to legend, the monk Saint Wulmer (* 620 in Boulonnais; † 697) retired for three days in a hollow oak tree. On the occasion of his death, a chapel was built and consecrated to him in 698. If this legend has a true core, then the village, which in the course of time was also called Eke , Heec and Eyke and in Latin Quercus and Quercetum , is very old. The Dutch name of the oak is Eik , the Flemish Eke . The first written mention of the village is found in 1278 in the copy book of the Abbey of Lille .
