Steenvoorde , West Flemish STEENVOORDE , is a French municipality with 4368 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Dunkerque and the Flandre Intérieure municipality . West Flemish is also spoken in Steenvoorde .
geography
The small town of Steenvoorde is located in French Flanders in the far north of France, about 30 kilometers southeast of Dunkerque and 35 kilometers northwest of Lille . In the northeast, the municipality borders on Belgium (Poperinge municipality). The predominantly flat area of the municipality is traversed by a few streams that drain via the Ey Becque towards the north to the Yser .
In addition to the closed settlement image of the core town, the districts of Le Riveld and Saint-Laurent as well as numerous scattered individual farms are located in the municipal area of Steenvoorde .
Neighboring municipalities of Steenvoorde are Winnezeele in the north, Poperinge in the northeast, Godewaersvelde in the east, Eecke in the south, Saint-Sylvestre-Cappel in the southwest, Terdeghem and Cassel in the west and Oudezeele in the northwest.

Folklore and carnival
In Steenvoorde, as in other cities in northern France and Belgium, there is the tradition of the giant procession ( Géants ). The giants can be seen at Carnival time, on the last weekend in April and at many other regional festivals. In 2006 the European Festival of Giants took place in Steenvoorde. Since 2005, the performances have been carried out by UNESCO under the title Processions of Giants and Dragons from Belgium and France as masterpieces of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity .
