Zuydcoote ( Dutch : "Zoutkote") is a French municipality with 1677 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France between Dunkirk and the Belgian border on the North Sea .

etymology

Zuydcoote comes from West Flanders and is made up of the word stems Zout = salt and Kot = hut. Literally translated it means something like "salt hut".

The inhabitants of Zuydcoote are called Zuydcootois / e (sing.) Or Zuydcootoises (plur.).

geography

Zuydcoote is located on the North Sea coast between the municipalities of Dunkirk and Bray-Dunes . The municipality has an area of ​​260 hectares. The height above sea level ranges from 1 to 26 m, with an average of 5 m.

The place is separated from the beach about one kilometer away by a 15 meter high dune.

history

Zuydcoote is first mentioned as a fishing village around 1200. Over time it belonged to Flanders , Burgundy , the Spanish Netherlands and from 1662 to France.

On January 1, 1777, the village was completely destroyed by a hurricane .

In 1940 parts of the British Expeditionary Force were evacuated to England from Zuydcoote as part of Operation Dynamo (see also Battle of Dunkirk ). The events were processed in the novel Week-end à Zuydcoote by Robert Merle and in its film adaptation Dunkirk, June 2, 1940 with Jean-Paul Belmondo .
