Grand-Fort-Philippe ( Dutch : Groot-Filip Fort ) is a French municipality with 5048 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Nord in the region Nord-Pas-de-Calais . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Dunkerque and the Canton of Grande-Synthe . The inhabitants are called Grand-Fort-Philippois .
geography
Grand-Fort-Philippe is the westernmost municipality in the north department. Here the river Aa flows into the North Sea and the English Channel . This section is part of the Opal Coast . Surrounded Grand-Fort-Philippe from the neighboring communities of Gravelines in the east and Oye-Plage in the west.

In 1883/84 the neighboring municipality of Gravelines became independent.

Culture
Grand-Fort-Philippe also celebrates the Dunkirk Carnival. The community also includes the giant figures La Matelote , Fiu , Gut , Soeur and Bergur .
