history

At the end of the 7th century, Maurant , the Duke of Douai , founded a monastery and a place called Bruël near the Leie . In 690 he transferred the leadership to an exiled bishop named Aimé de Sion (Saint-Amé).

Around the monastery a settlement developed, which is attested in 697 with the Latin name Maurontivilla - Broislum . In a document from 1076, King Philip I assigned the rights and property of the city now known as Menrivilla to the collegiate monastery of Saint-Amé in Douai. In 1431, Meerghem ( Flemish , roughly translated as "Meerheim") was granted the privilege of producing cloth from Philip the Fair . The same king signed the Ghisle de Menreville twenty years later , the 49 articles of which included a first real charter for Merville. With the Peace of Nijmegen , the city was annexed to the Kingdom of France in 1678 .

Between 879 and 1940, the city was completely or partially destroyed 11 times. Many of today's neo-Flemish style houses date from the period of reconstruction after the First World War .

At the beginning of the Second World War , the airfield was first used by the British (especially by Hawker Hurricanes ...), then taken by the Germans ( Messerschmitt Bf 110 ), the latter turning the existing grassy area into an airfield surrounded by bunkers with asphalt runways. The Americans used the infrastructure during the liberation of the city to maintain and repair their aircraft, especially their heavy bombers ( Boeing B-17 ...).

On June 12, 1944, a USAAF air raid caused numerous deaths on the axis of today's Rue du Général de Gaulle - Rue du docteur Rousseau , damaging the memorial for the victims of the First World War on the deux-ponts . The attack was due to a mix-up of targets, in fact the landing of the Allies had already begun at this point and the pilots apparently believed, when they saw the many people on the streets, in German reinforcements or refugees.
