Leffrinckoucke ( West Flemish Leffrinkhoeke ) is a commune with 4262 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the arrondissement of Dunkerque and the canton of Dunkerque-2 (up to the canton reform 2015 canton Dunkerque-Est ). The inhabitants are called Leffrinckouckois .
geography
Leffrinckoucke is one of the northernmost communities in France. It borders the North Sea in the north and northeast with a three-kilometer-long beach. Leffrinckoucke is surrounded by the neighboring communities Ghyvelde in the east, Uxem in the southeast, Téteghem in the southwest and Dunkirk in the west.
The A16 autoroute runs through the municipality .
history
The Menapians settled in the area. Leffrinckoucke is mentioned for the first time in 1241 in a document from Thomas II of Piedmont, Count of Flanders . In 1874 the fort was built in the dunes . A little later, in 1879, the Zuydcoote battery. During the First World War there was an airfield here. These facilities were integrated into the Atlantic Wall by the Wehrmacht during World War II.
