Zuytpeene , Dutch Zuidpeene , is a French municipality with 524 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Dunkerque and the Flandre Intérieure municipality . West Flemish is also spoken in Zuytpeene .
In the alphabetical order of the 36,782 municipalities (as of January 1, 2009) on French territory, Zuytpeene comes last.
geography
The municipality of Zuytpeene is located in French Flanders in the far north of France, about 30 kilometers south of Dunkerque and 15 kilometers northeast of Saint-Omer . In the south-west the municipality borders on the Pas-de-Calais department . The predominantly flat area of the municipality is traversed by the Peene Becque and some smaller streams (Zuytpeene, Lyncke Becque).
In addition to the closed settlement image of the core town, there are numerous scattered individual farms in the municipality of Zuytpeene. Intensive agriculture and the lack of forest areas are characteristic of Zuytpeene and the surrounding area.
Neighboring municipalities of Zuytpeene are Wemaers-Cappel in the north, Cassel in the north-east, Bavinchove in the south-east, Clairmarais in the south-west, Noordpeene in the west and Ochtezeele in the north-west.
history
Zuytpeene was the scene of the Battle of Cassel (French: Bataille de la Peene ) on April 11, 1677 as part of the Dutch War between the Netherlands and France, which ended in a French victory. An obelisk on the road to Cappel commemorates this event.

Folklore and carnival
The Géants de Zuytpeene (German: Giganten von Zuytpeene ) belong to traditional giant figures ( Géants du Nord ) that are common at festivals in northern France and neighboring Belgium . Since 2005, the performances have been carried out by UNESCO under the title Processions of Giants and Dragons from Belgium and France as masterpieces of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity . The characters from Zuytpeene are called Thomas le Mousquetaire (Thomas the Musketeer, since 1999) and Adélaïde (since 2006). The figure of Thomas goes back to Auguste Thomas Joseph Liot de Nortbecourt , who was the king's musketeer until the French Revolution.
Economy and Infrastructure
There are 27 farms in the community (grain cultivation, dairy farming, pig farming).
Zuytpeene is somewhat remote from the national traffic flows, but is connected to the surrounding cities and communities by a well-developed road network in all directions. The railway line from Dunkerque to Lille runs through the municipality (with a stop in the neighboring municipality of Bavinchove ). The LGV Nord high-speed line from Paris to the Eurotunnel runs parallel to the south .
