history

At the invitation of Pope Leo XIII. , who was looking for care for the unprotected Calixtus catacomb, the northern French Trappist abbey of Mont-des-Cats founded the monastery Nostra Signora delle Catacombe ("Our Lady of the Catacombs") in 1883 , which was elevated to a priory in 1888 and an abbey in 1891 . Even before the First World War , pilgrims and tourists were a disruptive factor for the monastic tranquility, and when difficulties arose with the Vatican after the war , the Trappists moved the abbey to Frattocchie (today: Marino) in 1929 and named the new monastery Abbazia Nostra Signora del Santissimo Sacramento ("Abbey of Our Lady of the Most Holy Sacrament"). The completion of the buildings lasted until 1949 (inauguration of the church). The monastery was founded by Pope Pius XII. (1956) and Pope John XXIII. (1962) visited by Pope Benedict XVI. a delegation of monks was received in audience in Castelgandolfo in 2009. The monks made chocolate for their maintenance until 1972, and have been making a living from viticulture ever since.
