The Abbey of Saint Sixtus (Latin: Abbatia BM de Sancto Sixto ; Dutch: Sint-Sixtusabdij ; French: Abbaye Saint Sixte ) is a Trappist monastery in Vleteren , West Flanders Province , Belgium .

history

After Benedictine nuns were already there from 1260 to 1355 and nuns of the Order of the Redeemer from 1615 to 1784 , Trappists from the nearby French monastery of Mont des Cats under Prior François-Marie Van Langendonck founded the Belgian priory of Saint Sixtus on the other side of the border in 1871 an abbey ( Sint-Sixtusabdij ) was raised. Since 1839 (the brewery was expanded from 1875 to 1878), a Trappist beer produced by the monks under the name Westvleteren has been associated with the abbey (2005 award as “Best Beer in the World”).
