history

Trappist monks from the Abbey of Sankt Sixtus Westvleteren in Vleteren founded the Scourmont Priory (after: secours-mont = Maria Hilfe Berg), which was raised to the rank of an abbey in 1871, thanks to the donation of land by Prince Joseph de Riquet de Caraman (1808–1886) . A beer brewed by the monks under the name Chimay and the cheese brand Abbaye de Chimay have been associated with the abbey since 1860 . Famous monks were Joseph-Marie Canivez and Anselme Dimier .
