The Trappist Abbey of Clarté-Dieu has been an African monastery since 1955 in Murhesa, Bukavu , Cyangugu District , Kabare Territory, Sud-Kivu , Archdiocese of Bukavu , in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo , on the border with Rwanda .

history

When in 1954 the monks of the Abbey of Scourmont the Trappist monastery Mokoto founded, went in their footsteps, the abbess of the monastery Igny , Lutgarde Lehalle , with some companions to the Belgian Congo (now Democratic Republic of Congo) and founded 20 kilometers from Bukavu from the monastery Clarté-Dieu ( "Brightness of God"), which was elevated to an abbey in 1956 . The monastery has suffered since the outbreak of the civil war . It was threatened in 1964, but was ultimately spared. Looting and injuries occurred between 1996 and 1998. On December 7, 2009, Sister Denise Kahambo Murahirwa was shot dead by soldiers in the monastery. Four days later, another attack on the monastery was repulsed by the police.

In 2000, founded the Sisters of Clarté-Dieu in Kibungo , Rwanda, the monastery Kibungo .
