Cyangugu is a city in southwest Rwanda . The city is located at the southern end of Lake Kiwu , right on the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo , about 200 kilometers southeast of the capital Kigali and has about 59,000 inhabitants. The next largest city is Bukavu in the DR Congo.
Since the territorial reform of January 1, 2006, Cyangugu has belonged to the Western Province and is the administrative center of the Cyangugu District . The Western Province emerged from the merger of the 2006 province of Gisenyi , the province of Kibuye , parts of Ruhengeri and the province of Cyangugu , whose capital Cyangugu had been until then.
