The Western Province ( kinyarwanda Intara y'Iburengerazuba , French Province de l 'Ouest , English Western Province ) is a province of Rwanda . It was formed with the introduction of a new administrative structure on January 1, 2006 from the former provinces of Gisenyi, Kibuye, Cyangugu and a small part of Ruhengeri. Their capital is Kibuye .

geography

Other cities are Gisenyi and Cyangugu . In the west the province borders on the Democratic Republic of the Congo or Lake Kivu , in the south on Burundi . Tourist attractions include Nyungwe National Park , the shores of Lake Kivu, the Bukunzi hot springs and the Virunga volcanoes . Numerous rivers run through the area between the hills and mountains. They shape the landscape, which is attractive to tourists, but also cause soil erosion . The provincial government's reforestation programs are intended to counteract this.

economy

Agriculture and animal husbandry are the most important industries in the Western Province, the soils of which are fertile. A variety of staple foods and cash crops of coffee, tea and pyrethrum are grown and various types of livestock are kept. In the future, the potential of fishing and beekeeping should be used more.

In terms of industry, there are two tea factories, a cement factory and a hydroelectric power station in Cyangugu. Cross-border trade with the Congo is carried out via Gisenyi.
